Peruvian Congress chose Luis Iberico as its new Chairman for the 2015-2016 period on Sunday.

Of 125 Congressmen present at the time, 70 votes led to the election of this opposition member, who belongs to the alliance formed by parties Partido Popular Cristiano (Popular Christian Party) and Alianza por el Progreso (Alliance for Progress).
Following legislators will hold Vice-Presidencies: Natalie Condori, Mariano Portugal and Luis Galarreta.

The remaining 55 voted for his counterpart Vicente Zeballos.

Thus, Iberico will replace ruling party Gana Peru's former Congress President Ana Maria Solorzano, who served during the 2014-2015 period.

The result means the opposition will assume the Congress Presidency, which had been presided over by the ruling party from 2011 to date.

“[Thus], our first commitment is contributing to governability, by building bridges of understanding, agreements [and] by putting mutual respect above all those differences, which strengthen democracy,” he told after being elected.
