Images captured by the PeruSat-1 satellite are highly useful for various sectors and will shortly be used for planning in agriculture, transport and environment, Defense Minister Mariano Gonzalez affirmed today.

Following the signature of the agreement to use said satellite imagery for cultural heritage protection, Gonzales mentioned it is time to harness the satellite in different sectors for country's development.

"Just as we are doing today with the Culture Ministry, we hope to sign other cooperation agreements, since the images will be useful for different sectors such as agriculture, environment, transport, housing, economy and many others," he assured.

The satellite's contribution is highly relevant in activities such as water management, disaster prevention, crop monitoring, agricultural land use, as well as geological and mining resource exploration, the government official explained.

As shown by international experience, investments in space technology prove very positive for countries, leading to major benefits such as protection of archaeological sites.

"I am deeply satisfied by the signing of this agreement that will mark a milestone in protecting our country's cultural heritage," he highlighted.

On the other hand, Culture Minister Jorge Nieto noted the images will allow Peru to move forward in the recording of archaeological sites nationwide.

"The country has over 100,000 cultural heritage sites, but we've only registered 12,000. This means we can have a collective view of our heritage in a relatively short time," he stressed.

Out of said 12,000 sites, 212 have been duly registered.

The Culture Minister underscored such mapping will contribute to planning archaeological sites' protection, such as the Nazca Lines (Ica region).
