Tourism industry in Peru currently accounts for 3.8 percent to 4 percent of the annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the country’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) reported Wednesday.

Magali Silva, Mincetur’s head, noted that companies engaged in tourism and travel sector in the country give jobs to nearly 1,100,000 individuals, 20 percent of which came from the community-managed rural tourism market.

In this regard, the senior government official pointed out her sector works with more than 30 rural communities in order to create strategic partnerships aimed at bolstering tourism across high-Andean areas and the country’s hinterlands.

Likewise, the top Mincetur executive recalled that mining firms have been working with communities in social responsibility programs in areas that are over 3,000 meters above sea level.

"Because, above 3,000 meters, there is alpaca or sheep farming activity, it can complement well with tourism," Silva noted said.
