Peruvian Council of Ministers on Wednesday adopted an electoral reform bill to prevent corrupt candidates from being elected at polls, and to avoid use of illicit money in election campaigns.
Announcement was made by Peru's Prime Minister Fernando Zavala at a press conference. He was joined by Defense, Justice, Interior and Labor heads. Lawmakers Gilbert Violeta and Mercedes Araoz were present, too.
Zavala said the bill introduces proposals to minimize the possibility of electing corrupt authorities and to decrease the risk of illicit money entering into campaigns.
It also includes measures to strengthen political parties and improve their representativeness before the population.
According to Zavala, the proposal was motivated by high corruption rates at all State levels.
He emphasized Peru requires clean authorities to build itself, hence the Executive's decision to take such initiative into the Parliament.
"Corruption is present at all government levels; it's a harsh reality we must face firmly. We need to clean and tidy up our house before building a new country," he expressed.
"So, the government has taken a series of measures to end this scourge, but we know this is not enough. We need to go further."
The initiative will compliment efforts by the National Election Board (JNE), Transparency Civil Association and a Congress Commission working on electoral reform.
The proposed legislation will be submitted to Congress for deliberations.
