Trendy Peruvian eatery Astrid y Gaston in Lima claimed the top spot at the inaugural Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony in Peru on Wednesday.

Astrid y Gaston has long been acclaimed as one of Peru’s most exciting places to eat, where simple Peruvian cooking is combined with chef-owner Gaston Acurio’s own character and style.

The event, organized by William Reed Business Media, ranks the 50 best restaurants in Latin America as voted for by an academy of more than 250 influential leaders in the restaurant industry across the region.

Supported by Astrid y Gaston’s achievement in reaching the summit of the prestigious list, Peru dominates the top 10 with Virgilio Martinez’s Central at no. 4 and Malabar at no.7.

The other four Peruvian eateries on the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list are Lima’s Maido (no.11), Rafael (no.13), Fiesta (no.14) and Acurio’s La Mar (no.15), demonstrating the diversity and repute of Peruvian cuisine.

Acurio was also the recipient of The Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award in Latin America at last night's event, recognizing his contribution to Peruvian gastronomy.

Earlier this year in London, Astrid y Gaston was ranked Number 14 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna and also organized by William Reed Business Media. The restaurant made its debut on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants List in 2011.

Argentina boasts the largest number of restaurants on the list with 15, followed by Mexico with 9, Brazil 9, Colombia 4, Chile 2, Uruguay 2 and Venezuela 1.
