13:57 Peru's Armed Forces can help spur development, fight inequality

Lima, Jul. 12 (ANDINA). The new enemies to fight the Peruvian armed forces are poverty and inequality, President Ollanta Humala has said, while opening an international seminar on technical training Wednesday.

In opening remarks to the meeting on "The role of technical career in national development and social inclusion," Humala said the Armed Forces can contribute to reduce inequality and provide technical training to meet the demand for skilled labor.

He noted that this role will be fulfilled by the planned Center for Advanced Technology in technical courses that will instruct military personnel and young civilians.

"It is important that the Armed Forces contribute to national development, in narrowing the gap of inequality, especially in a period of economic growth, in which inequality generates conflict and resentment," Humala was quoted as saying by Prensa Latina.

The president added that the military technicians can help to reduce the deficit in infrastructure, telecommunications coverage, building schools and health, and other tasks.
