11:17 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Apr. 26.

At least 220,000 devotees are expected to visit Virgin of Chapi Sanctuary on the occasion of May 1 festival, held on her behalf, Arequipa Archbishop Monsignor Javier del Río Alba predicted on Wednesday.

The religious festivity gathers thousands of followers from different parts of the country and abroad, spurred by their devotion to Arequipa's patron saint.

According to Monsignor Javier del Rio Alba, pilgrims will start showing up on April 29; many will come on foot, while others will opt for bus/car rides, but they all share the same purpose: be part of the festivity.

The sanctuary is located in the traditional district of Polobaya, two hours from Arequipa city.

Thousands of people reach the temple to venerate the Virgin at this time of the year; such veneration dates back to Colonial times and continues to present day.

It should be noted religious authorities work hand-in-hand with the Police, the Red Cross, and the Transport and Communications Regional Office to ensure appropriate steps are taken to safeguard worshipers.

A total of 800 police officers will be deployed in the surrounding areas, and the Red Cross is expected to send some 120 volunteers, too.
