Peru to take part in 2014 World Equestrian Games

Peru will be participating for the first time at the World Equestrian Games, the world's most important sporting event in this discipline, taking place in Normandy, France, from August 28 to September 7, 2014.

The Andean nation will be represented by the rider Alonso Valdez, who will be competing in the jumping category as of September 2nd. 

"I am very proud to represent my country in a world championship like this taking place in France. I will do my best to achieve a good performance", the Peruvian athlete said.

Meanwhile, the president of the Peruvian Equestrian Federation, David Levy, said: "Alonso will carry the Peruvian flag on his shoulders [during the event] as Peru's participation in a world championship is historic". 

The prestigious World Equestrian Games have been held every four years  under the support of the International Equestrian Federation, or FEI since 1990 and see all aspects of the sport competed.

The last Games, held in Kentucky in 2010 saw 632 athletes from 58 countries compete on 752 horses and attracted a global television audience of over 400 million. Expected attendance for this year's edition is of more than 1,000 competitors from 74 nations.
