Peru to meet Argentina for gold at U20 Final Four

Peru swept Dominican Republic 28-26, 25-17, 25-13 in 69 minutes to remain undefeated at the U20 Final Four Women’s Gatorade Cup in front of about 3,000 spectators at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Saturday night.

The victory secured Peru a spot in the gold medal match against Argentina on Sunday. The Argentinean team blanked Cuba 25-10, 25-8, 25-17 in the first match of the day.

On Friday, Peru overcame Cuba in four sets (23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-13) to claim their second victory in as many days in the U20 Final Four Women’s Gatorade Cup at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum, in Lima.

It is worth mentioning Peru edged Argentina in a five-set battle 26-24, 19-25, 25-19, 15-25, 15-10 in the opening day of the competition last Thursday.

The Peruvians trailed in the early stages of all three sets, but climbed back to take the lead before the first technical time-out and never relinquished. 

Peru held a big advantage in attacks (49-29) and also led of 7-5 in both blocks and serves categories.

The top scorer of the match was Peruvian Maguilaura Frias with 20 points followed by Angela Leyva and Katherine Regalado with 12 and 11, respectively. Natalia Martinez was the best for the Dominican Republic with 14 points.

Argentina needed just 54 minutes to dispatch Cuba in  the opening match on Saturday with Sol Piccolo leading the way with 19 points, followed by Camila Hiruela who tallied 11 points. Claudia Hernandez topped Cuba with just nine points. 

The winners showed their power leading in attacks (35-16) and aces (7-1) while getting the edge in blocking (6-5).

Preliminary round standings: 

1. Peru (3-0, 12 points), 2. Argentina (2-1, 10), 3. Dominican Republic (1-2, 7), Cuba (0-3, 1).
