Peru to face Puerto Rico at World Volleyball Grand Prix

The Andean nation squad ready for second week of World Grand Prix action

The women's national volleyball team of Peru have arrived in the city of Trujillo ahead of their matches in the second week of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix from August 1 to 3.

The Gran Chimu Gymnasium will host Group M, which includes Peru, Poland, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. All the matches in Peru will be aired at prime time by nationwide broadcast Frecuencia Latina.

Peru's debut will be on Friday August 1 against Puerto Rico. They will then take on Cuba on Saturday August 2, and will close their participation in Group M on Sunday against Poland. 

The Peruvian squad trust the support of the volleyball fans in the coastal city of Trujillo will help them to shine, fivb.org reported.

"This is a new opportunity for us to keep learning. The three teams we will be playing this week in Trujillo have a great level,” Coach Natalia Malaga while noting her team is young and their objective is to keep growing.

"We have practiced very hard because we know that this is one of the toughest tournaments this year and even though I believe we have done a good job, it is not enough,” said Rafaela Camet, Peruvian key player.

She added, “We keep giving it all in every match because we know that the Peruvian fans are expecting better results." 

In turn, Peru's captain, Angela Leyva stressed the team are hoping to count with the support of all Trujillo as to play with the gym full of fans would be a great motivator.

“The fans’ support will play a fundamental role; our rivals have to feel that it is not only us playing against them, but the entire country fighting for a new Peruvian win," Leyva noted.
