Peru's Minister of Agriculture, Milton von Hesse, said Friday that the country has potential to become the world's largest exporter of organic cacao and a major producer of chocolate.
According to studies, he said, Peru is the birthplace of cacao in the world. Its distinctive flavor and aroma make this product highly demanded in the market.

"This helps small producers increase their income and improve their living conditions and it is also a tool in the fight against drug trafficking," he said.

At the opening of the fourth edition of Peru Cocoa and Chocolate Salon, Von Hesse noted that in the last years new chocolate brands have been created in the country.

The annual event, which runs from July 5-7 this year, takes place at Sheraton Lima Convention Center from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
