Teacher performance assessment cannot be dispensed with, and the push for quality education must remain on Peru's agenda, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said Tuesday.
"The assessment process —which seems to be the target of the [teachers'] strike— cannot be omitted. Some changes can be made, but that's what we need to discuss," he was quoted as saying.
Peru's top official said his Government is willing to negotiate, but there is one thing they cannot change: the country's strive towards better education.
On Monday, strikers declined to sign an agreement with Peru's Education Ministry (Minedu), as they refused to go through a performance assessment process.
"I maintain my support to the [Education] Minister and to all Ministers without a doubt," the Head of State affirmed last Thursday while supervising post-disaster reconstruction works in northern Piura region.
At that time, the statesman underlined government actions to improve public school teachers' working conditions.
