Peru's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Nestor Popolizio on May 19 held a meeting with Diego Beltrand, Regional Director for South America at the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The dialogue sought to assess projects to strengthen the management of Peruvian consulates, as well as the implementation of the National Migration Policy.
As part of the meeting, IOM offered international cooperation to implement the Migrants in Countries in Crisis (MICIC) Initiative, which aims to improve the protection of migrants when the countries —in which they live, work, study, transit, or travel— experience a conflict or natural disaster.
In addition, IOM vowed technical and financial support to deliver the South American Conference on Migration's (SACM) 12th Intersessional Meeting, to be held in Lima in August 2017.
Similarly, IOM said it would support the Inca country's national consultation process regarding inter-governmental negotiations to adopt the United Nations' Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
Following the audience, Deputy Minister Popolizio highlighted IOM is the Peruvian State's main ally in moving towards international migration governance.
On the other hand, Director Beltrand reiterated IOM's commitment and readiness to continue to help Peru develop and implement international migration related projects, including the return of highly-qualified national citizens.
The meeting also featured Ambassador Enrique Bustamante, Director-General of Peruvian Communities Abroad at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, as well as Jose-Ivan Davalos, Chief of Mission at IOM-Peru.
