The Peruvian economy, one of the strongest in the region, is set to rebound to 6 percent next year and, thus, surpassing, among others, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay and Brazil, Finance Minister Luis Miguel Castilla said on Wednesday.

The government official used his concluding speech during the parliamentary debate on the government’s general policy approach to outline the country’s growth rate forecast for next year, which is supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“I can say for sure and, according to the latest projections from the International Monetary Fund, that in 2015 Peru will grow by 5.8 percent,” followed by both Colombia and Chile, which will experience growth at a rate of 4.5 and 4.1 percent, respectively.

Castilla went on to quote the IMF report World Economic Outlook that says Mexico is expected to see growth at 3.5 percent and Brazil at 2.7 percent.

When questioned by members of Congress, the finance minister acknowledged the country has suffered a severe shock that impacted on its economic performance this year; however, he is confident the government’s intervention will help overcome this tough phase.

In addition, he said the downturn can be explained by domestic and external reasons, such as the “social shock” caused by problems in agriculture, mining and fishing industries, as well as the decline in public and private investment.
