The Peruvian Government is introducing a plan to bolster tourism activity throughout the country, including upgrade works at airports in various provinces, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said Saturday.

"We are going to improve domestic airports in Tingo Maria, Oxapampa, Andahuaylas, for instance. We want to build another in Abancay, if possible. The plan is to improve tourism connectivity all over Peru," the statesman indicated.

Remarks were made on Saturday during his TV program titled "Conversando con el Presidente" (A Conversation with the President), which featured Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros.

New domestic routes have been launched, he said. They include daily direct flights like Lima-Jaen.

According to the 78-year-old, Jauja airport in Junin has seen some improvements, thus attracting more airlines to operate in such region.

During the talk —held at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport— he stressed the need to improve the country's capacity in order to increase tourist flows.

In this sense, Peru's top official referred to improvements at the said airport.

"The terminal can handle up to 20 million passengers per year. Plus, this number will increase to 38 million once expansion works are completed, and to 60 million in 2040, given its first-class facilities," he added.

He affirmed Cusco region's Chinchero airport project remains in place, as it aims to increase the number of visits to the region.
