A total of 143,600 new jobs were created in Peru during the second quarter of 2017, thus adding up to a total of 16,184,900 employed citizens, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Tuesday.
The economically active population (EAP) increased in urban areas by 1.4% (166,900 people) in the April-June period, but slid 0.6% (23,200 people) in rural zones, INEI head Anibal Sanchez informed.
"Regarding geographic areas, employment grew 4.3% in northern coastal regions and 4.7% in northern highland ones, thus showing a rebound following the
Coastal El Niño phenomenon event […]," Sanchez pointed out.
In terms of business size,
employment climbed 2.7% (296,300 jobs) in micro enterprises (fewer than 11 employees). However, it fell 1.8% and 3.6% in small (fewer than 51 employees) and medium-large enterprises (51 employees or more), respectively.
As for economic activity, the services sector posted the highest
employment increase, up 1.6% (109,200 people).
Trade EAP inched up by 1% (29,600 people) and manufacturing jobs increased by 0.9% (13,400).
Median income in urban areas expanded 2.4% in July 2016-June 2017 over the same period the year before.
