Peru was ranked 14th among emerging economies on the Inclusive Development Index (IDI-2018) released by the World Economic Forum, above Mexico's 24th position and Brazil at the 37th spot.
The Inca country situates itself in the top quintile among emerging economies in terms of employment, carbon intensity, and public debt.
Likewise, the
report shows Peru is placed in the second best quintile when it comes to GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, and median income.
On the matter, Lima Chamber of Commerce's (CCL) Institute of Economics and Business Development (IEDEP) Executive-Director Cesar Peñaranda explained Peru is the leader in terms of employment since its unemployment rate is lower than in other countries across the region.
"Peru holds a low unemployment rate. If we see the statistics, it stands at 8%, meaning the country's employed people account for 92% of the economically active population," he told El Peruano official gazette.
Nevertheless, he said informality is still present, as well as underemployment. 74% of the labor force is informal, which does not provide social benefits.
Regarding the carbon dioxide generated by the productive activity, he said, the importance of polluting energy sources in the country's productive structure is very low.
"That's why we rank in the top 20. The energy we use is gas or oil. This contributes to the sustainability of development," he noted.
