Peru: Protesters march against child sex offenders

14:37 | Lima, Feb. 9.

Lima citizens demanded more severe punishment for rapists in Peru during a Thursday protest named "March for Justice, Security and Peace for our Children."

Chanting "Death penalty for rapists" and "Justice for Jimena," women, men and children gathered at Lima's San Martin Square to speak out against sexual abuse of children.

The massive demonstration was organized by relatives of Jimena —an 11-year-old girl who was recently kidnapped, raped and murdered in Lima's San Juan de Lurigancho district.

The victim's family members, social organizations, and other groups called for a stricter law to protect minors and punish rapists.

The march proceeded peacefully and ended up in a public meeting led by the girl's parents Diana Ruiz and Jorge Vellaneda, who demanded Jimena's murder does not go unpunished.

Similar demonstrations took place in other cities across the country including Arequipa, Huancayo, and Chimbote.
