Peru proposes Eguiguren as member of OAS Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

The Government of Peru proposed former minister of Justice, Francisco Eguiguren, as a member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States (OAS), which promotes and protects people’s rights across the continent.

With this candidacy, the Government aims at contributing to enhancing the Inter-American human rights system as part of Peru’s efforts to develop social inclusion and consolidate practical requirements to preserve these rights.

Eguiguren’s experience as jurist and his thorough knowledge of human rights prompted his appointment as first Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Peru, a position he held from July to December 2011.

In addition, according to the Foreign Ministry, his academic, practical contribution to the promotion and respect of constitutional and judicial guarantees, constitutional precepts and the democratic institution strengthening, would be essential for the undertaking of the commission’s operations.
