Peruvian private sector is projected to invest US$2.5 billion in tourism-related infrastructure projects before its bicentennial year 2021 to meet increasing visitor demand, Lima Convention and Visitors Bureau President Carlos Canales said.

“We estimate that US$2.5 billion will be invested only in the tourism sector, US$1.3 billion of which will go to Lima,” he told Andina news agency.

Yesterday, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski pledged to double the number of international visits to Peru from 3.5 to 7 million by 2021.

“This investment amount mirrors the engagement of the business sector, which is confident Peru will expand in terms of tourism and that more visitors will come, so improved infrastructure is required,” Canales was quoted as saying.

President Kuczynski’s ambitious goal towards Peru’s bicentennial independence celebration was announced during a celebration that marked World Tourism Day in the presence of businessmen and tourism sector players gathered at the Government Palace in Lima last Tuesday.

“These words are very important for us, because they imply that tourism activity will be prioritized, and concrete actions are entirely necessary to reach the goals that are being implemented,” he said.

According to Canales, the visa waiver for Chinese nationals has been a rapid and important move in this regard. He also noted the fast way to unlock investment in Lima International Airport's second landing strip.
