13:40 | Huamanga (Ayacucho region), Dec. 9.

On the occasion of National Army Day, Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski today praised the Armed Forces, stressing the need for justice and meritocracy among the military.

"We need an Army that lives in justice. […] Justice must exist, but it must also work quickly […]," the Head of State said.

"We want a non-political army, an army that is always there; an army where promotion is merit-oriented," he added.

In this sense, the statesman spoke highly of the Peruvian army, underlining the suffering it has endured and its role defending the nation against terrorism.

This date, he said, is a day to celebrate the virtue of patriotism, enthusiasm over a cause, courage and independence. "I praise the Armed Forces for their work for the development of the country," the President expressed.

Mr. Kuczynski pointed out his visit to the southern region is also an opportunity to reflect on the Andean Trapeze (composed of Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Apurimac regions), an area in need of water, highways, dams, health and education tools.

"That’s why we are here, to remind ourselves that this is an urgent task," he concluded.

Remarks were made at the ceremony commemorating the 192nd Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, which marked the consolidation of Peruvian Independence and National Army Day.
