Peru President travels to Arequipa region to verify damage after strong quake

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski headed to Arequipa region to inspect the damages caused by a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the area.

"Right now, we are travelling from Marcona to Acari and Chala (Arequipa region) –towns hit by the quake early Sunday morning– to verify the magnitude of the damages and send the corresponding humanitarian aid," he said via Twitter.


So far, the strong earthquake has left one dead and several roads damaged.

The National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) informed Pisco and Arequipa airport operate normally.

Likewise, operations at Matarani, Atico and San Nicolas ports were unaffected by this natural disaster.

According to Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP), the seismic event struck the coast of Arequipa Sunday at 4:18 AM.

The epicenter was 56 km south of Lomas town in Arequipa at a depth of 48 km.
