Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Friday welcomed National Police powerlifting team members at Lima's Government Palace.

The Head of State congratulated Colonel Aldo Muñoz Ygal, Major Luis Zerpa Garcia and Non-commissioned Officer Andres Albornoz Tinoco on their extraordinary performances at the GPA/IPO World Championships.

As is known, the national athletes were crowned powerlifting champions at the said event, held in Moscow (Russia) on December 8-11 last year.

The agents explained powerlifting, although not considered an Olympic sport, is similar to weightlifting, but requires more strength and less speed.

In order to earn the medals, the Police members faced athletes from over 13 countries in the Masters category (age 50-54), including U82.5 kg – U110 kg divisions.

They performed in dead lift and bench press disciplines.

On the other hand, the Peruvian leader praised the fostering of this sport among Police members.

Likewise, he reminisced about his own experience in weightlifting, when he used to lift up to 80 kg.

The meeting also saw the presence of Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio and National Police Director General Vicente Romero.
