Peru President meets with IDB Chairman

23:34 | Lima, Oct. 08.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala requested the country on Thursday night to trust the hard work undertaken by his administration, aimed at mitigating the impacts of world’s economic slowdown.

"I tell the country: Be confident. We continue working hard and responsibly, so the impacts of headwinds, the current world economic slowdown, that will hit us, will be less abrupt […],” the President told in a joint statement with Inter-American Development Bank Chairman Luis Alberto Moreno.

Thus, the Head of State said the government will conduct efforts required for Peru to maintain the economic growth rhythm driven by public investment and spending expansion.

Likewise, he assured his administration will proceed with the execution of projects it committed to build.

Also, Mr. Humala expressed confidence extreme poverty in the Highlands will continue being reduced, as well as will be the case in rural areas and regions, where the government presence is needed.

The Annual Meetings of the WBG and the IMF currently underway in Lima shows Peru making a concrete progress in the integration into the international community, he said.

According to the President, the country reflects the image of a nation that is capable of hosting international meetings, such as APEC forum to be held next year and the COP20 that took place in Lima last December.

At the meeting Mr. Humala and Mr. Moreno reviewed the relevance of social programs and the handling of the macroeconomic policy, which allows Peru to keep financially expanding despite the international crisis.

Peru is focused on reaching the goals through the productive diversification policy by investing in human capital thanks to the scholarship program designed by this administration. This is incorporated into the educational infrastructure enhancement and the implementation of a series of reforms in the aforementioned sector, he noted.
