The time has come to address the subject of a pardon for former President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), current Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski affirmed on Thursday.

Statements came in response to a press question about an interview with a foreign media outlet in which the Head of State had touched on the matter.

"I think it is time to address the [pardon] subject. I was very cautious during that interview when addressing the things I am —and the ones I am not— able to do," Mr. Kuczynski said.

"Now this has come up, and we will deal with it prudently," he added.

The 78-year-old statesman was emphatic that the pardon does not relate to the country's political situation

"Politics is one thing, and a person's health is another one […]," the Head of State told reporters.

As is known, Alberto Fujimori currently serves a 25-year sentence in Lima for crimes against humanity. His administration was also accused of corruption.

His daughter Keiko lost to Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in the 2016 presidential runoff. However, her party (Fuerza Popular) holds the majority in Congress (72 out of 130 seats).
