Peru President: Gov't invested US$3.55 billion in sanitation works

The current government has invested S/12.00 billion (about US$3.55 billion) in sanitation projects, the highest figure in the History of the Republic, Peruvian President Ollanta Humala highlighted on Thursday.

Mr. Humala stressed significant works have been developed across rural areas throughout his time in office.

"A total of S/12.00 billion (about US$3.55 billion) has been invested in the sanitation sector over this 5-year period. That investment was not made in the past [...]. It is part of the water revolution we are moving forward," he stressed. 

Water coverage 

The current administration is working on projects aimed at providing drinking water to Lima's peripheral districts inhabitants.

The Peruvian leader went on to add similar works will be executed in the country's Loreto and Puno regions, among others.

Likewise, the President mentioned his regime will leave between 87%-88% of national roads paved, a higher figure compared to the previous administration's accomplishment (54%).

Mr. Humala also highlighted the government's economic achievements.

"Some countries have implemented tax hikes, but this government has bet on you [the people]; we have cut taxes and increased by 6% the budget for next year," he explained. 
  
Peru's top official also emphasized the State-run scholarship system, which will grant 100,000 fellowships to Peruvian students.

The said goal that must be pushed forward, as well major reforms in productive diversification, social policy, infrastructure and health investments, he suggested.

Remarks were made during the inauguration ceremony of "La Chira" waste water treatment plant in Lima's Chorrillos district. 

The project entailed an investment worth S/360,452,216.40 (about US$106.64 million) and will benefit 18 Southern Lima districts.
