Poverty reduction will accelerate in mining-project influence areas thanks to the alliance established by government-run Sierra Exportadora program and sector's enterprises.

Program Chairman Alfonso Velasquez stressed mining enterprises' commitments, reflected on 11 pilot-programs currently developed in different areas of Peru.

"Developing productive businesses in communities located close to mining projects enables to increase locals' average income, and thus contribute to poverty reduction in the Highland's rural areas," Velasquez expressed.

Products, such as trout, avocado, blueberry, as well as oregano have been developed thanks to the said pilot plans.
"These are products highly demanded on international markets," he noted.

In this sense, the official mentioned the case of Corani, Carabaya province (Puno region) located at heights of 5,000 meters above sea level.

"Chacaconiza and Quelcaya communities tailor Alpaca-fiber and silver thread-made garments which can be worn by people suffering from diabetes, thanks to their antibacterial properties," he pointed out.

This initiative is boosted by Sierra Exportadora Program, as well as Bear Creek mining.

Coordination

Product development was made possible thanks to direct support from mining enterprises based in eight regions.
In this sense, the chairman requested the said sector to remain interested in collaborating with least-privileged people.

Over previous months, a significant decrease in social conflicts has served as the basis to set up these types of alliances.

"A Confidence platform has been established, on which the Peruvian State, communities and mining enterprises can achieve their goals," the Sierra Exportadora Chairman expressed.
