Peru: Pope Francis rides Popemobile in flood-hit town

13:52 | Trujillo (La Libertad region), Jan. 20.

Even if only for a few minutes, the pain in flood-stricken northern Buenos Aires neighborhood gave way to overflowing faith and emotion as Pope Francis rode the Popemobile along a parade route on Saturday.

The area was severely affected by seven devastating Coastal El Niño landslides in early 2017 that flooded out around 100 families and affected thousands of others.

Following a warm welcome and presents —including a red and white chullo (Andean earflapped hat) that he wore for a moment— by local authorities and children, Pope Francis boarded the Popemobile to tour the town.

The Supreme Pontiff waved as he cruised past the cheering crowds waiting for him along "Papa Francisco (Pope Francis) Avenue," formerly known as "Libertad Avenue" but renamed after the Holy Father.

Arrangements also included a bust of Pope Francis as a reminder of his visit, as well as Pope-inspired flower carpets.

The papal vehicle then drove down Pedro Herrera Street to the district's main square, Pope Francis warmly greeting the thousands of believers all the while.

The Bishop of Rome also imparted a papal blessing to the overjoyed residents, who will never forget the much-awaited visit.

The event was part of Pope Francis' pastoral activities for the third day of his visit to Peru.
