Peruvian government's response to natural disaster emergencies was fast and efficient, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala assured on Monday.

The "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon —characterized by heavy rains, landslides and floods— has been the strongest and the most devastating natural disaster in recent decades.

In this sense, the cabinet head praised the Kuczynski administration's decision to deploy State ministers in various harshly-hit areas to lead assistance efforts during the initial emergency stage.

The high-ranking official also stressed said phase was essential to saving the lives of citizens affected by the onslaught of nature.

In addition, Zavala highlighted government measures adopted to aid victims by providing them with shelters, food and medical attention.

Lastly, he praised solidarity efforts undertaken by all Peruvians, who supported disaster-hit people.

"At the hardest times caused by Coastal El Niño, we saw several citizens turned into heroes [...]," he stated.

Remarks were made during his presentation to Congress. At the site, Zavala introduced the government's "Reconstruction with Change" plan.
