The 1st Meeting of Amazon Mayors and Executive Branch taking place today in Iquitos city (Loreto region) will serve to address key issues with local authorities and develop a common agenda, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala affirmed on Friday.

"We are hoping to discuss relevant issues, infrastructure projects —sanitation and others— that will likely come up for us to make decisions on," the Cabinet Chief told RPP TV and radio station.

"The meeting will allow us [to develop] an important common work agenda with mayors," he added.

The government official anticipated the said activity will be replicated in other areas of the country.

In this sense, he informed the next one could take place in May with 200 mayors from southern regions.

Mayors meeting

The 1st Meeting of Amazon Mayors and Executive Branch will be presided over by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, featuring State Ministers and more than 200 district and province Mayors from Amazonian regions: Loreto, Amazonas, Madre de Dios, San Martin and Ucayali.

The event will also see the presence of Prime Minister Fernando Zavala, as well as Ministers Alfredo Thorne (Economy and Finance), Martin Vizcarra (Transport and Communications), Jose Manuel Hernandez (Agriculture and Irrigation), Elsa Galarza (Environment) and Eduardo Ferreyros (Foreign Trade and Tourism).

Ministers Marilu Martens (Education), Patricia Garcia (Health), Edmer Trujillo (Housing, Construction and Sanitation) and Cayetana Aljovin (Development and Social Inclusion) will also join the meeting.

The activity aims to create a space for dialogue between State Ministers and local authorities to learn about Amazon towns' main demands, as well as to enable projects execution and improve local government management.
