10:30 | Piura (Piura region), Mar. 27.

Peruvian Army brigades are making strenuous efforts reinforcing flood protection mechanisms to keep Piura River waters (northern Piura region) from invading more streets and homes.

River flow —currently at more than 3,000 m/s— has already flooded various areas of the main city. Flood waters have even reached Piura's regional government headquarters.

Army squads work from the wee hours fortifying riverbanks to prevent waters from causing further damage.

In Castilla district several streets lie under water, including the avenue leading to the region’s airport. Travelers are now forced to make connections to get to the terminal.

Furthermore, at least one bridge has given in to the raging currents and has water coming out of both sides of the structure, Piura Mayor Oscar Miranda informed.
