Almost S/.500 million (about US$152 million) has been paid in reparations to the victims of terrorism-related violence during this administration, Human Rights Deputy Minister Ernesto Lechuga announced.

The amount includes individual and collective reparations in compliance to a program implemented every year, especially in Ayacucho, Apurimac, Huancavelica, Cusco and in other regions hit by conflict, which started in the '80s.

“This is a State policy that has continued with a lot of effort and has seen a significant progress during this administration. 100% of individual reparations will be paid this year,” he was quoted as saying by Andina news agency.

Even though duly registered individual victims were awarded their corresponding compensation, most of the population benefited from collective reparations, given that such resources were used to implement different works in favor of the community.

According to Lechuga, collective reparation payment is applicable when those directly affected by the 1980-2000 violence cannot be identified.

The comprehensive plan, proposed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR), is part of the National Human Rights Plan.
