Between January and May 2015 1,398,750 foreign tourists arrived in Peru, which led to a growth of 7% compared to the same period in the previous year, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva affirmed.

In 2015's first five-month period, Chilean tourist arrivals stood out, since those experienced an increase; 45,965 more, which led to a 12% expansion. Thus, Chileans accounted for 30.6% of the total visitors in Peru during the period.

With this regard, Minister Silva pointed out the sustainable growth is due to the strategic promotional camping designed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism through PromPeru (Peru’s Export and Tourism Promotion Board) and the efforts undertaken by the Commercial Office located in Chile (OCEX Santiago).

She went on to add the market has been "prioritized" by establishing strategic alliances with tour operators and promoting PromPeru-run Ytuqueplanes.cl website.

Likewise, the Head of the Ministry reminded the held-in-May 'Peru Mucho Gusto' gastronomy fair gathered over 3,900 Chilean visitors in Southern Tacna.

U.S. and Latin America

Between January and May, an increase in the number of U.S. tourists (4,275 more) was registered, which led to a growth of 2.1%.

Likewise, American travelers accounted for 15% of the total international visitors in the country. Therefore, U.S. was ranked the second main source of tourists.

In the January-May period the presence of visitors from following nations increased: Ecuador (11.1%), Argentina (8.3%), Mexico (6.8%), Colombia (6.5%) and Brazil (2.8%). Those markets accounted for 22.7% of the total of tourists.

In Mexico, Colombia and Brazil strategic alliances with important tour operators and airlines are being established, the Ministry affirmed.
