Peru's Development and Social Inclusion Ministry concluded the installation of the first 1,141 rural housing units (warm homes) to face frost in South-Andean Cusco, Apurimac and Puno regions, Minister Cayetana Aljovin informed Wednesday.
Installation works included the set-up of double doors and windows, roof insulation, polycarbonate sheet walls, tongue-and-groove wooden bedroom flooring, as well as enhanced stoves and chimneys.
Said features increase home temperatures by 10°C in areas at over 4,000 m.a.s.l.
"In the past, people literally froze to death during frost events, but now they stay warm thanks to Mi Abrigo (
My Warm Shelter) project," she underlined.
The initiative is part of the 2017 Frost and Friaje (
cold spell) Multisectoral Mitigation Plan promoted by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's administration as preventive measure.
The Development and Social Inclusion head noted said 1,141 warm homes represent the first stretch of the Government's goal to build 40,000 by 2021.
To conclude, Minister Aljovin informed My Warm Shelter project will be extended to include highland areas in southern Arequipa, Huancavelica, Moquegua and Tacna regions.
