Peru, Norway and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) took part in the signing of a deal aimed at implementing the project “Embarking on the Journey to Implement the Transformation Phase of the Joint Declaration of Intent between the Kingdom of Norway and Peru.”

The signing featured Peruvian Environment Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Norwegian Ambassador Hege Araldsen, and UNDP Resident Representative Maria del Carmen Sacasa.

The initiative will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+1) and promote sustainable development in Peru.

Pulgar-Vidal thanked the Kingdom of Norway for its willingness, and stressed the strategic alliance with UNDP, as it guarantees the successful implementation of the project with a concrete future outcome.

“Not taking action in light of climate change would make us miss the train of history and development within a given timeframe that will guarantee citizens' quality of life. For this reason, the government leaves a mark that allows others to build on what has been previously done. Actions like this show that we work within a state policy,” he stated.

Within 18 months and under a US$6 million fund, the project will implement Phase II of the Joint Declaration of Intent in a participatory and decentralized manner with technical cooperation of UNDP.

The initiative will increase the country's forest area by more than 250,000 hectares under the scheme of conditional direct transfers.
