Peruvian non-traditional exports to US grew by 90.3% over a seven-year period (2009-2015) started since the FTA entered into force, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva highlighted on Monday.
Such exports climbed from US$1.568 billion (2009) to US$2.985 billion (2015).
"Non-metallic mining exports stand out and expanded by 349%; followed by iron-steel (240%), chemical (175%) and agriculture (144%) shipments," Silva noted.
Most dynamic products
Trading of asparagus, grapes, fresh avocados, quinoa, artichokes and mangoes benefited the most from the agreement.
Likewise, Silva emphasized US is Peru's second-largest trade partner. The commercial exchange totaled US$12.804 billion.
"US is the main destination for our non-traditional exports [28% of the total] promoted by the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry and Promperu [...]," she affirmed.
Second main destination
Silva also noted the American market is the second main destination for Peruvian exports.
In 2015, non-traditional exports to the US amounted to US$2.985 billion. The sub-sector accounted for 60% of total shipments to said target market, the official underlined.
Foreign Direct Investment
According to the Minister, the US is the third-largest Foreign Direct Investor in Peru (13%).
Other benefits
Thanks to the FTA implementation, Peru was able to adapt legislation on customs, intellectual property, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, environment, among other related-issues.
The Peru-US FTA was inked in Washington D.C. on April 12th, 2006 and entered into force on February 1st, 2009.
