State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) pursues to include four of its areas in the Green List of Protected Areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), due to their high standards in environmental management and administration.
These sites include the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve (Madre de Dios), the Calipuy National Sanctuary (La Libertad), the Matses National Reserve (Loreto) and the Cordillera Azul National Park (San Martin, Loreto, Ucayali and Huanuco).
The fundamental premise of the program is that it will be able to recognize success in achieving conservation outcomes, as well as measure progress in, and impact of, equitable governance and effective management of Protected Areas.
According to Cecilia Cabello, Director of the Protected Natural Areas Management Division at Sernanp, Peru will be the second Latin American country to apply for inclusion in the list that will showcase the good conservation practices and sustainable development model put into place in protected areas.
This is our opportunity to showcase what is being done in these natural zones and prove that the State takes decisions together with its actors and strategic partners.
“Our best allies in the areas are Management Committees, Administration Contract Executors (ECAs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), patronages, locals and the private sector. We plan to join forces to shape development at the regional level, thereby resulting in more benefits,” he stated.
