The Permanent Mission of Peru to the United Nations (UN) on Tuesday sent a letter of protest to its Surinamese counterpart over an invitation to former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), currently a fugitive from justice.
The protest was lodged after Suriname's Mission to the UN invited Toledo to give a conference as part of an event on public-private partnerships held in the United States.
In this sense, Peru's Foreign Ministry points out the said event —organized by Suriname's mission— neither constitutes an official UN activity, nor does it engage the multilateral organization in any way.
Days before, Toledo was also seen playing pool at a bar in Los Angeles.
Toledo – Odebrecht case
As is known, the
wanted ex-President faces influence peddling and asset laundering charges.
He has been accused of receiving US$20 million in bribes from Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht to secure a major infrastructure venture.
As a result, the Peruvian Judiciary ordered his preventive detention and issued an international arrest warrant for extradition purposes.
