Lima Metropolitan Area's economically active population (EAP) saw a 2% increase in 2016 with the creation of 92,300 new jobs, Peru's National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Monday.
Likewise, in the last quarter of 2016, employment in the Peruvian capital expanded 1.2%, INEI head Anibal Sanchez specified.
"That is 56,100 more new jobs than in the same period in 2015," Sanchez highlighted.
Last year, Peru's male working population increased 2.1% (54,200 people), whereas that of women rose by 1.8% (38,100 people).
Considering age, the 45-or-more age group climbed 2.5% (29,900 people), followed by 25-44 year-olds at 1.8% (45,000 people) and the under-25 at 1.8% (17,400 people).
Regarding economic activity, the services sector posted the highest employment increase, up 5% (128,800 people). Construction EAP remained stable, whereas manufacturing and trade employment dropped 2.6% (-18,400 people) and 2.4% (-22,900 people), respectively.
Average monthly income
On the other hand, median income increased 4.8% over 2015. For women the average monthly income was up by 6.6%, while for men it grew by 3.8%.
Such rise mainly impacted the population with university higher education (+6.5%), followed by those with non-university higher education (+3.1%), with primary (+2.3%) and with high school background (+1.9%).
Highest income rise was recorded in manufacturing (+8%), construction (+6.4%) and services (+4.4%) sectors.
Nationwide employment figures for 2016 will be released in February, INEI concluded.
