Madre de Dios rainforest region hosts an Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization's (ACTO) regional technical meeting to establish a common agenda for the protection of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI), the Peruvian Culture Ministry reported.

The institution revealed the initiative is aimed at gathering contributions to develop a Regional Health Plan for PIACIs taking Madre de Dios as a benchmark.

The meeting also seeks to identify control and protection measures for reserve territories, as well as Peruvian State strategies to face illegal activities.

Likewise, it is intended to reinforce cooperation among ACTO members through the exchange of information.

The event was launched in Lima on August 14 in the presence of ACTO Indigenous Affairs Coordination head Sharon Austin and Peruvian Culture Ministry Indigenous Peoples Rights Director-General Angela Acevedo.

Representatives of ACTO member states (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador), as well as Peruvian officials and international experts, were present as well.

The regional technical meeting also involves a field visit to the Culture Ministry’s control and surveillance point at Pariamanu River.

Amazon Cooperation

The Amazon Cooperation Treaty was signed in 1978 by Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela as a legal instrument that recognizes the Amazon's cross-border nature.

Amazon countries proceeded to create the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization in 1995 in a bid to strengthen the treaty's institutional character.
