Peru recently joined the Second Annual Conference of COPOLAD II, the Cooperation Programme on Drug Policies between the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean countries, the Foreign Affairs Ministry reported.
COPOLAD is a partnership cooperation program aimed at improving the coherence, balance and impact of drugs policies, through the exchange of mutual experiences, bi-regional coordination and the promotion of multisectoral, comprehensive and coordinated responses.
Held on May 15-19, the event included multilateral fora and discussions to address the world drug problem.
During the conference, the Peruvian delegation highlighted COPOLAD's support to national programs, training of public officials, bi-regional political dialogue, as well as the consolidation of National Drug Observatories.
Conference participants also addressed the challenges posed by Internet drug dealing and the growing use of synthetic narcotics, which demand rapid, effective and coordinated responses.
EU-CELAC Drug Mechanism meeting
In this context, the Inca country also participated in the XIX High Level Meeting of the EU-CELAC Coordination and Cooperation Mechanism on Drugs, held in the Argentinian capital on May 18-19.
Meeting participants exchanged information to track the implementation of recommendations given during the 2016 Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGASS) on the World Drug Problem.
The event concluded with the adoption of the Buenos Aires Declaration, a non-binding political instrument that outlines the bi-regional antidrug strategy and strengthens cooperation in this sense.
