Peru has turned into an irreversible decentralization process and the current challenge lies on strengthening the State and its presence nationwide, Peruvian Finance and Economy Minister, Luis Miguel Castilla, said on Saturday.
Castilla highlighted the lead of the Ollanta Humala’s administration in promoting a more useful State in the regions by pledging to give them more mechanisms to improve their budget execution capabilities, thus avoiding excessive centralism procedures.

“The country has entered an irreversible decentralization process where many responsibilities of the central government have been transferred to regional and local governments,” he told an interview with RPP radio.

Nevertheless, the minister expressed his concerns with regard the issue of some regions which have not implemented the needed capabilities to assume successfully their management roles in core matters such as health, education and security, among others.

In that sense, he praised the decentralized Ministerial Council meetings taking place in the several country's inner regions.

"These meetings target to raise awareness of ongoing issues being faced by the regions as well as to enhance cooperation with local authorities to concentrate efforts on improving livelihood opportunities," the Finance minister said.

He added, "The last gathering was held in Lambayeque, and the ones to be carried out in the future will be a platform to set up new public policies to address those issues."
