Peru's Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Edgar Vasquez, held working meetings with high-level Indian authorities with the aim to pinpoint the start of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries.
During an official visit to New Delhi held from August 20th through 22nd, the senior Humala administration official showcased a varied range of projects and prospects Peru offers to potential investors from the East Asian nation.
Moreover, Vasquez addressed entrepreneurs with a conference titled "Peru, a country of opportunities" with the focus on displaying profitable investment opportunities available in Peru's expanding economic activity.
Likewise, this conference was a platform to gather key decision makers from the Indian government and top business leaders where they vowed for deepening the countries’ trade cooperation.
India is one of the world's most dynamic economies. It is an attractive market for Peru, as its population exceeds 1.3 billion people and its annual imports exceed US$ 500 billion.
The two-way trade volume between Peru and India has gone up seven times over the last five years. Trade between the two countries touched US$1.5 billion in 2013, thus turning India into Peru's fourth largest trade partner in Asia.
The Peruvian government has 40 free-trade deals across the world including China, the United States and the European Union.
