About half a dozen mining projects, including Quellaveco, will be operational in the short-term, National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy (SNMPE) reported.

"The Government has a quite realistic list; certainly, the first projects to get underway will be those whose environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been approved, meaning around half a dozen," SNMPE head Luis Marchese said.

According to the latest Energy and Mines Ministry's report, projects with EIA and construction permit include Quellaveco (Moquegua), Ollachea (Puno), Conga (Cajamarca), Crespo (Cusco), Shauindo (Cajamarca), Shouxin (Ica) and Tambomayo (Arequipa).

"These are not as large as Las Bambas (Apurimac) and Cerro Verde (Arequipa), but are medium- and large-scale projects," Marchese added.

It is worth noting that Quellaveco's estimated investment of US$5 billion exceeds that of Conga (US$4.8 billion).

Other projects with EIA, but without a building permit are Tia Maria (Arequipa), Fosfatos (Piura), Pampa de Pongo (Arequipa), Corani (Puno), Pukaqaqa (Huancavelica), San Luis (Ancash), Ariana (Junin) and Magistral (Ancash).

In the case of Santa Ana (Puno) and San Gabriel (Moquegua) projects, EIA documentation is being reviewed.
