Peru’s Transport and Communications Minister Martin Vizcarra today projected the unblocking of US$3 billion worth of projects by the end of the year, highlighting the expansion of Jorge Chavez International Airport and Chinchero’s air terminal (Cusco region).

As is known, Economy and Finance Minister Alfredo Thorne previously announced the government had already unblocked projects worth US$1 billion, and the government expects to unlock more projects — valued at US$18 billion in total — over the next 12 months.

“If we consider projects where all administrative and legal issues have been addressed, then we can include Jorge Chavez [International Airport], worth US$1.2 billion. This project alone exceeds the US$1 billion announced by the Finance Ministry earlier this week,” the official said following his presentation at the Annual Conference of Executives (CADE) 2016.

Vizcarra then referred to Chinchero’s International Airport, a US$600 million investment, as another venture to be reactivated.

Autopista del Sol (road) and Road Network N° 6 (Cerro Azul – Ica region) are also part of the projects to be unlocked.

It is worth noting that government efforts to reactivate US$18 billion in major investment projects will lead to a 4.8% growth rate in 2017, according to Cesar Liendo, General Director of Macroeconomic Policy and Fiscal Decentralization at the Finance Ministry.

Peru’s economic growth is expected to pick up next year, he said. In this sense, market forecasts place expansion at 4.2%, whereas the Central Reserve Bank and the Economy and Finance Ministry project 4.5% and 4.8% growth rates, respectively.

Said positive evolution in 2017 will be driven by infrastructure and simplification of administrative procedures.
