00:00 | Tumbes (Tumbes region), Mar. 26.
The Government of Peru will on Monday launch "Peru in Emergency," a work program intended to support people in flood, landslide affected areas, Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced.
Announcement was made in Tumbes —where the launch will take place— as he arrived to monitor actions taken to contain the emergency.
The initiative is part of the government measures adopted to aid people in said northern region.
Recently, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala explained the government will allocate S/25 million (about US$7.7 million) to a temporary work program that offers positions for those residing in affected areas. The idea is to hire locals for restoration projects.
Likewise, Labor Minister Alfonso Grados said the program will be implemented in 200 districts where state of emergency has been declared.
As part of his visit, Mr. Kuczynski provided two motor pumps to drain water from flooded streets.
The 78-year-old statesman also met with Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) members, with whom he assessed the situation after overflying the affected zones.
He said one of the priorities in this area is to unblock the northern road on the Pan-American highway hit by overflowing rivers, and help farmers conduct an evacuation of agricultural production.
