The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) inked the agreements to authorize the development of four projects, which aim at providing broadband internet and intranet access to connect remote town residents with State institutions, regional, local governments and the education, health and interior sectors.

The agreement signing ceremony, which took place at the Lima Government Palace on Wednesday afternoon, gathered Peru’s President Ollanta Humala; Transport and Communications Minister, Jose Gallardo; and the Executive Director of Peru’s Investment agency (ProInversion), Carlos Herrera.

The MTC and Gilat Networks Peru signed the three-project financing agreement on the “Implementation of broadband for the comprehensive connectivity and social development" to enable connection for Apurimac, Ayacucho and Huancavelica regions.

Also, the Ministry and Telefonica del Peru corporation inked a project financing agreement known as "Broadband Comprehensive Connectivity for the Social Development of the Northern Zone - Lambayeque region."

4 Projects

The projects aim at providing broadband intranet and internet access for the said region's public, private institutions and inhabitants through the implementation of an "optical transport network" and an access network.
In February, projects were awarded by Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversión), as was requested by Fitel (Telecommunications Investment Fund).

Gilat Group is composed of companies “Gilat To Home Peru” and “Gilat Satellite Networks Israel.”

The projects will benefit 2,380 public institutions, such as schools, health facilities and police stations. Once articulated with the optical Fiber National Backbone (awarded by ProInversion in December 2013), those will cover the demand of 1,344 towns and benefit over 747,000 Peruvians.

Co-financing

The co-financing required by awardees was US$345,587,829. This amount will be provided by Fitel.
