Peruvian gross domestic product (GDP) increased 2.4% in the second quarter of 2017 over same period last year, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Tuesday.

According to INEI head Anibal Sanchez, final private consumption experienced growth (2%), as did government consumption (2.1%), goods and services exports (11.7%), as well as imports (7.1%).

Likewise, final private consumption expenditure grew 2% due to higher purchases of food (3.3%), durable goods (3.1%) and services (2.7%).

Nevertheless, purchase of non-durable goods slid 3.1%.

INEI explained government's final consumption expenditure expanded 2.1% thanks to greater provision of public education (5.1%) and public health (2.9%) services.

However, public administration and defense services decreased 0.3%.

Exports

According to INEI, exports of goods and services rose 11.7% as result of higher traditional products volume (+13.8%).

Mining (8.7%), fishery (135.7%) and oil-natural gas (29.6%) products stood out in the analyzed period.

Likewise, non-traditional exports volume increased 8.9%.

Goods and Services

Exports of goods and services expanded 11.7% during the analyzed period due to greater sales of fishmeal (161.8%), zinc (43.8%), avocado (44.2%), frozen and chilled fish-seafood (37.8%), as well as copper (13.7%).

Imports

On the other hand, imports increased 7.1% underpinned by greater purchases of raw materials, intermediate- and consumption-goods.
