Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna on Thursday called on the Organization of American States (OAS) to invoke the Inter-American Democratic Charter in order to address a possible solution to Venezuela's political crisis.

The call was made in light of the alteration of democratic order in the Bolivarian country.

The government official highlighted the lack of independence between Venezuela's government branches enables its Executive to undermine the work of Parliament, thereby breaching the rule of law.

Thus, Member States must assist the fellow South American nation in overcoming its serious political crisis and preventing the humanitarian situation from further deteriorating, Luna said.

In this respect, the Foreign Affairs Minister said effective steps are required —as per alternatives stipulated in the Charter— for OAS to take on its role as regional body to solve political crises.

In addition to the dialogue and Papal mediation process underway, OAS Member States must play an effective role activating the Democratic Charter, he added.

"Invoking this Charter does not mean suspending and isolating a country, but rather using different options available to commit it for solving the issue," he explained.
