Along with mining, the fishing sector will be among the main factors boosting Peru’s GDP growth in November, National Fisheries Society (SNP) President Elena Conterno affirmed on Monday.

“The sector will consolidate its place as one of the main driving forces behind economic growth in November, an upswing we’ve seen since August with higher caballa [Pacific chub mackerel] volumes,” she said.

National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) data revealed a 3.43% expansion in the fishing sector in October 2016, underpinned by higher fishing of species for direct human consumption (+3.61%).

The rise in fishing activity projected for the eleventh month will be driven by the contribution of Peruvian anchovies, Conterno explained.

Likewise, the SNP head expects fishing conditions to return to normal in December. “Hopefully, we will be able to produce up to 800,000 or 1 million tons of fish meal; that would be a significant increase,” she estimated.

On the other hand, Conterno is confident that weather conditions will normalize in 2017, leading to a positive year in terms of fishing production.

Coves

The SNP President also expressed her agreement with the closing of coves to protect young species, a measure enforced by the Production Ministry.

“In these cases, fishing vessels can relocate to other areas, because their permits only apply to anchovies,” she added.
